Building the Enterprise
Cloud: Understanding the Opportunity
Liam Gunson, Senior Consultant
IDC New Zealand
The changing times have put pressure on
the economic efficiencies and a viable return
on all capital
investments a business makes including IT.
The last 12 months have further exacerbated
this sentiment
thereby focusing IT end-users to contemplate
alternative means in building their IT in
the future. However, this is easier said
than done, since there ar many a challenges
in existing legacy, maintaining compliance
and the ever evolving security issues.
Our research with end-users and line of
business have underscored two prominent
IT issues they wish to resolve. The CIOs
feel Datacenter transformation is the fundamental
goal, while the line of business need IT
that better serves their customers for both
growth and retention. Keeping these goals
in view its a forgone conclusion that the
current IT model needs to be revamped, and
that it needs to be built and delivered
in new ways.
The concept of "cloud computing" is very
interesting as it promises to deliver more
flexibility, better cost optimization, green
and faster turnaround. Many feel this to
be a panacea for many of their current challenges.
However, there is also a lot of apprehension
around exactly what can or cant be out on
the cloud.
In this presentation IDC will endeavor to
explain the direction the industry has taken
so far, and discuss the opportunities and
challenges customers face in that regard.

Clouds on the Horizon
- A Tale of Modern IT
Paul Kangro, Applied Technology Strategist
Novell
The future always looks like a distant place
until you get there - its only then you realise
that you should have planned things a bit
better. Cloud Computing, if you only believe
some of the hype, will allow you a whole new
way of putting all the lego blocks together
- a whole new architecture. What can you do
now to help you plan for the fast approaching
future? Understanding your current workloads
and using heterogeneous management tools for
virtual systems is a good start. Understanding
how your applications fit into your company's
value chain is better still. This presentation
will given an evaluation of how current technology
will morph into the cloud and how to get the
best advantage for your enterprise in the
near term. |

Cloud Computing and
the New Zealand Supercomputing Centre
Steve Osborn, Service Line Manager Client
Technologies
Gen-i
The New Zealand Supercomputing Centre (NZSC)
is one of the world's largest commercial providers
of supercomputing facilities to industry and
academia. It is operated by Gen-i, a division
of Telecom New Zealand Ltd and delivers computing
services to a broad range of sectors, including
biotechnology, education, manufacturing, oil
and gas, digital media, electronic design
automation and geosciences. In addition to
discussing the evolution of cloud computing,
marketscope and challenges, Steve will talk
about how choosing the right technology partners
has been crucial in transforming a static,
manually-operated data centre into a highly
flexible and automated environment, where
resources are dynamically allocated based
on what is needed by any given business at
any given time. |

HP
The cloud is the next stage in the evolution
of the Internet. Cloud provides the means
through which everything will be delivered
to you as a service from computing power to
business processes to personal interactions
wherever, however, and whenever you need it.
Cloud computing represents entirely new value

Cutting Through The
Cloud Hype
Neil Osmond, Strategy Manager –
Technology
Gen-i
There is a lot of hype around the value that
cloud computing brings to business. Cloud
is actually nothing new, but the recent recession
has helped to propel cloud to the top of many
business agendas. Cloud has the potential
to offer greater financial agility, business
efficiency and market responsiveness….when
it’s done correctly. Your success depends
on ensuring that the use of cloud technology
is focused around a clear business outcome
and that the services you invest in work well
together and are fit for purpose.
Gen-i will take you through what the landscape
could look like in the future and show how
navigating the cloud will become the most
important component of successful cloud users. |

The Cloud over North
Shore - North Shore City Council’s
Progress to The Cloud
Tony Rogers, General Manager Customer and
Information Services
North Shore City Council
There has been huge interest in the developing
phenomenon of cloud computing over the past
two to three years. The North Shore City
Council are recognised leaders in government
in Australasia in the way in which ICT services
needed for the organisation are obtained.
The Council has implemented an innovative
approach to the procurement of the ICT services
needed for this complex service delivery
organisation. Whilst not yet operating as
a ‘private cloud’, the Council
is a long way down the journey. This presentation
will look at the journey North Shore City
Council has taken so far and the steps needed
to become a full ‘private cloud’
computing environment.
